Rules and Repertoire Requirements 2021

MUSIC OF IMMORTAL AND LIVING COMPOSERS

The Brooklyn Music Teachers Guild is proud to present the BMTG Intercontinental Competition 2021, featuring music of Immortal and Living Composers!

 

There will be five piano categories:

 

 Young Composers Award

The Brooklyn Music Teachers Guild is seeking young aspiring composers to submit original piano solo works. BMTG’s goal is to promote new music and inspire young composers to reach the heights of such greats as Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Joplin, Ellington and Gershwin! The winners will join the list of featured living composers for the BMTG Intercontinental Piano Competition 2021, and will have the distinct honor of having their work performed at the competition’s Winners Concert at Carnegie Hall. Monetary prizes will also be awarded. All entries will be evaluated by a panel of BMTG’s featured composers and will receive written comments.

 

Young Composers Award Guidelines:

 

  • Ages 7 – 18 (at the time of the application) may apply.

  • Applicants may submit a maximum of 2 contrasting compositions, no longer than 6 minutes in total duration.

  • Compositions may be elementary, intermediate or advanced levels.

  • Classical, romantic, contemporary , new age and jazz styles will be accepted

  • Only original compositions will be accepted – no arrangements or transcriptions.

  • Previously published works are not eligible.

  • Compositions must be submitted as an unedited video recording of applicant's performance, which should not exceed the allowed time duration. The video should not contain any references to the name of the composer (ex. subtitles). The video should be submitted via YouTube (private/unlisted video), or Dropbox. 

  • In addition, all composition scores must be submitted as PDF format.

  • Plagiarism of copywritten material is illegal.

  • It is the sole responsibility of the composer to confirm that any work, or any part or elements of the work submitted, are not copywritten.

  • Application Deadline:  July 20, 2021

  • Application Fee:  $50

 

Piano Competition - Conducted in 2 Rounds

 

Round One - Music of Immortal Composers (17th - 21st Century)

Repertoire may not include works of living composers, except for Piano Trio (One Piano/Six Hands).

Round Two - Music of Living Composers (Featured Living Composers)

Required Materials to enter the competition include:

  • Complete Round One Application (Piano Solo, Piano Duet, Piano Trio)

  • A copy of birth certificate or passport that serves as proof of the applicant's age as of TBD (Round One and Round Two), and country of residence

  • The age of the contestant will be determined by the date when Application and Application Fee have been received.

  • An unedited video recording of applicant's performance of required works, which should not exceed the allowed time duration, designated in regulations below. The video should not contain any references to the name of the performer (ex. subtitles), but should include angles of the performer's face and hands. The video should be submitted via YouTube (private/unlisted video), or Dropbox. No simplified arrangements will be accepted.

  • A non-refundable application fee for Round One submitted with application. Fee is payable online or via check or money order made out to BMTG. 

  • A non-refundable application fee for Round Two will be submitted with application by those contestants who pass Round One. Fee is payable online or via check or money order made out to BMTG.

For Round Two, the repertoire must be selected from the list of featured Living Composers. Some of the music may need to be obtained directly from the composer or publisher. Please direct all questions regarding the repertoire to: bmtgmusic@yahoo.com

Elementary Level A: ages 5 - 7

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 5 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 5 minutes 

Intermediate Level A: ages 11 - 13

ROUND ONE:  1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes 

Advanced Level A: ages 16 - 18

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 7 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 7 minutes 

Elementary Level B: ages 8 - 10

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 5 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 5 minutes 

Intermediate Level B: ages 14 - 15

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes 

Advanced Level B: ages 26 +

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes 

College Level: ages 19 - 25

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes 

PIANO DUET CATEGORY
(One Piano, Four Hands)

Elementary Level A: ages up to 9

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 5 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works,up to 5 minutes 

Intermediate Level A: ages up to 13

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 6 minutes 

Advanced Level A: ages up to 18

ROUND ONE: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes

ROUND TWO: 1 or 2 contrasting works, up to 8 minutes 

Elementary Level B: ages up to 11

PIANO WITH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA/ENSEMBLE

(Repertoire selections for Piano with Chamber Orchestra/Ensemble will be posted and updated TBD. It will include concertos and other compositions, orchestrated for Piano and Chamber Orchestra/Ensemble.  The same repertoire selection may be used for both rounds, which might include a single composition or a single movement of a concerto. For the first round the contestants have also a choice to prepare one or two solo works by Immortal Composers. The listed repertoire is not assigned to any specific age group.)
